His remarkable talent and charm led television producers to notice him, culminating in his first significant role on the sketch comedy series “In Living Color” in 1991. Subsequently, he headlined his own sitcom, “The Jamie Foxx Show,” from 1996 to 2001.
His major film breakthrough occurred in 1999 with a role in the Oliver Stone-directed movie “Any Given Sunday,” where he starred alongside Al Pacino and Cameron Diaz. Early Life
Born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas, Jamie Foxx was adopted shortly after his birth and brought up by his grandparents, Esther Marie and Mark Talley. His biological parents played little to no role in his upbringing. Despite a demanding Baptist upbringing, Jamie credits his grandmother’s influence for his successful career. At the age of five, he began playing the piano and became known for sharing creative jokes with his classmates during elementary school. Jamie excelled academically, participated in basketball, and served as the quarterback for the football team at Terrell High School. He earned a scholarship to United States International University, where he studied musical and performing art composition.
Comedy Career
Beginning his stand-up comedy journey in 1989, Foxx joined the cast of the hit sketch comedy series “In Living Color” within two years, remaining with the show for its final three seasons. Following the show’s conclusion, he was awarded his own series, “The Jamie Foxx Show,” which ran for 100 episodes from 1996 to 2001, earning nominations for several Kid’s Choice and NAACP Image Awards. In 1998, Jamie received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He has also released stand-up specials on DVD, including “Straight from the Foxxhole,” “Unleashed,” and “I Might Need Security.”

The 1992 comedy “Toys” marked the debut of Foxx in films. During this early period, he featured in other movies such as “The Great White Hype” and “Any Given Sunday,” the latter of which garnered him his initial award nominations for his film performances.
His nominations continued with his roles in “Ali” (2001, where he starred alongside Will Smith), “Breakin’ All the Rules,” and “Collateral,” which earned a worldwide gross of $217.7 million. For his collaboration with Tom Cruise in “Collateral,” Foxx received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2004, Jamie took on the role of Ray Charles in the biopic “Ray.” His portrayal in the lead role earned him a whopping 19 awards, including both the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Actor. The following year, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Among the other significant films in Jamie’s career are “Stealth,” “Jarhead,” “Miami Vice,” the acclaimed adaptation of the stage musical “Dreamgirls,” the biopic “The Soloist,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” “Valentine’s Day,” “I’m Still Here,” “Due Date,” “Horrible Bosses,” “Django Unchained,” “White House Down,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Horrible Bosses 2,” “Annie,” “Sleepless,” and “Baby Driver.” In September 2007, Jamie received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a day he describes as one of the most surreal experiences of his life.

Music Career
An accomplished recording artist, Foxx has launched five studio albums throughout his career. His debut album, “Peep This,” released in 1994, saw little commercial success. However, his second album, “Unpredictable” (2005), achieved remarkable success, earning a double-platinum certification from the RIAA. This album topped both the “Billboard” 200 and U.S. R&B charts, while reaching #9 on the UK albums chart. To date, it has sold 1.98 million copies in the U.S. Notable singles from this album include “Unpredictable” (featuring Ludacris), “Blame It” (featuring T-Pain), and “Fall for Your Type” (featuring Drake). Additionally, Foxx contributed to the #1 singles “Slow Jamz” by Twista (featuring Kanye West) and “Gold Digger” by Kanye West.
Renowned for his collaborative works, Foxx was part of the 2005 Ludacris and Field Mob single “Georgia,” which sampled the classic Ray Charles song, “Georgia on My Mind.”
A fan of country music for many years, he collaborated with Rascall Flats on the song “She Goes All the Way” in 2007. During the Artist of the Decade All-Star Concert, he performed George Strait’s “You Look So Good in Love.” When hosting the 2009 BET Awards, he opened with a rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”
On May 25, 2017, Foxx became the host and executive producer of the Fox game show “Beat Shazam.” The show was renewed for a fourth season on January 31, 2020.
Personal Life
Jamie is recognized for
Maintaining a low profile in his personal life, he has two daughters: Corinne (b.1994) and Anelise (b.2009). Corinne, his elder daughter, is both a model and an actress, having co-hosted “Beat Shazam” alongside Foxx.
After her separation from Tom Cruise in 2012, Foxx began a long-term relationship with Katie Holmes, which reportedly ended in August 2019.
In April 2003, an incident occurred in New Orleans involving Foxx as he was escorted out of Harrah’s Casino. Claims from casino employees indicated that he and his sister did not show identification upon entry. Consequently, Jamie faced charges for battery against police officers, resisting arrest, trespassing, and disturbing the peace. He accepted a no-contest plea for the disturbing the peace charge, resulting in the dismissal of other charges. Ultimately, he received a sentence of two years probation and was fined $1,500.
On January 18, 2016, Foxx heroically rescued a drunk driver from a burning vehicle that had crashed near his home. The driver was speeding when the truck veered off the road, landing in a ditch and rolling over several times.
Health Issues
Early in April 2023, while filming a movie alongside Cameron Diaz in Atlanta, Jamie experienced a medical emergency that required hospitalization for nearly a month. During this time, his family requested that the public “Pray for Jamie.” Corinne later revealed that her father had encountered a “medical complication,” yet specifics about the incident remained unclear.
Real Estate
In 1997, Jamie acquired a 5,400-square-foot residence in Tarzana, California, for $930,000, selling it later in June 2008 for $2.23 million.
Jamie purchased a sprawling 40+ acre estate in Hidden Valley, California, for $10.5 million in March 2007. This rural property boasts a 17,000-square-foot home, featuring ten bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, along with various other living structures. Amenities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a professional-sized basketball court with stadium-style seating. Although the exact worth of his estate, technically located in Westlake Village, is hard to gauge, it is likely valued at over $20 million.
In January 2016, Foxx exhibited bravery by rescuing a man from a car that had crashed close to his Westlake estate, moments before the vehicle was consumed by flames. The 32-year-old driver was trapped and would have likely perished if not for Jamie’s quick actions. Hearing the crash from his car, he immediately called 911 and rushed to the scene, using scissors to free the driver from his seatbelt before pulling him from the wreckage. Shortly after their escape, the truck exploded.
